If the fountain of youth exists, it probably isn’t hiding in a supplement bottle. According to Dan Buettner, who popularized the concept of Blue Zones, the biggest secret to living a long, healthy life starts with everyday habits, especially what’s on your plate.

For more than 20 years, Buettner has studied the world’s five Blue Zones, where people commonly live into their 90s and beyond while avoiding many of the most common chronic diseases. One of the biggest similarities is a diet centered on whole, mostly plant-based foods like beans, vegetables, whole grains, nuts, and healthy fats, with very little meat. Buettner follows that approach himself, eating plenty of beans, vegetables, herbs, and spices while steering clear of meat and ultra-processed foods and choosing whole-food options when dining out.

Buettner says longevity is about more than food:

  • Eat a mostly whole-food, plant-based diet, with beans as a daily staple.
  • Cook at home more often and limit ultra-processed foods.
  • Stay active through enjoyable movement like walking, cycling, or pickleball instead of punishing workouts.
  • Make time for family, friends, and a strong sense of purpose.
  • Prioritize good sleep and other healthy lifestyle habits that bring joy, not stress.

The biggest takeaway is that living longer isn’t about chasing perfection. It’s about building a life that’s nourishing, active, social, and enjoyable enough that healthy choices become part of the journey, not a chore.
